project 4 : inTension with Michael J. Horan

objective:

By utilizing sounds, create an entertaining and interactive environment that evokes playful childhood memories.

context:

This would be installed in public places, such as galleries, parks, and childrens' museums.  The problem today is a limited number of simple and fun musical experiences for children and adults.

A TIME AND PLACE - Christian Moeller

Tensegrity Sculpture - Squid Labs

Rubber Band Instruments - Elemental students all over the world

A TIME AND PLACE uses human gestural interaction, but is impractical because it is too big.   The Tensegrity Sculpture focuses too much on the technical aspect of the electronic sensing rope and not on the generation of sound.   Rubber band instruments are easy for children to build, yet their playability is limited.   Our challenge is to create an immersive environment that clearly links vibration and sound.

users:

Children and adults who want to explore human gestural musical interfaces.

design criteria:

  • Self-explanatory interaction
  • Easy-to-play
  • Fun-to-play
  • Utilizes entire human form
  • Self contained audio generation

solution:

We want to create a personal space allowing a user to explore sound generation using their whole body.   The physical construction should be as unobtrusive as possible, not using opaque materials but "transparent" methods like an array of bungee cords.   Slipping between the corded sides should evoke the sense of entering a private space, with the user accidentally triggering tones, revealing the potential of the space.   Through the exploration of movement in space, the user will unlock the curiosity of youth and learn that playfulness will yield a more interesting experience.
